Book Bibliography

Book of the Week:  Ken Geiser, Materials Matter: Towards a Sustainable Materials Policy, Cambridge MA: MIT Press, 2001  A landmark work, Materials Matter covers virtually every aspect of materials policy, including possibilities for dematerialization and detoxification of the industrial economy, and regulatory measures to make it happen. In the process, it provides other great intellectual gifts—like its concise 30-page history of the use of materials in the US industrial economy.  A rare book in that it is grounded in (very accessible) technical information while holding up a vision of an ecological economy. Not just a theorist or academic, Geiser is founder and director of the Lowell Institute for Sustainable Production at UMASS-Lowell, and a major force in the movement for toxics use reduction and extended producer responsibility (EPR).   See another review.
